What Deepavali means for Malaysian Indians?
As Deepavali is just around the corner, I decided to spur the festive mood by bringing up this post. You see, every year when Deepavali is nearing, I would always wonder to myself what Deepavali means for us after all. Enough of all those “Krishna defeated Narakasura” (or whatever his name is) stories. In fact, there are variety of stories on why Deepavali is being celebrated.
Now, let us put that aside. As you all may know, I love to observe and pen down my observation, and this time, I’m going to pen down what I think about Deepavali and how the Malaysian Indians are making use of it. Here we go:
1) For a 16 years old macha and a 16 years old machi, these kids would spend the whole previous week of Deepavali by searching for “tamil depavali frenster comments” (notice the grammar mistakes) and spend rest of their day on a single mouse click on the “Add Comment” link, CTRL+C and CTRL+V.
2) For some teenage Indian chicks, they would love to beautify their Friendster shoutout to make them as unique as possible. But too bad, whenever they come up with a shoutout, the very same shoutout would have been posted by 50 other Indian girls. The most common one would be: “hApPiE dIWAL! t0 aLL!! LuV yA! *HuGZ n’ kiSSeS”. I wonder what Deepavali has to do with loving everyone, hugging them and giving them kisses.
3) For those teenage Indian boys, yeah, this is their chance! They would go through some of the random girls Friendster profiles’ and send them a message. The same message that would be sent to 50 other random Indian girls. “Hey, I came across ur profile and JUST wanted to wish you happy deepavali”. Guys, this technique used to work previously but now, it has became a lame technique. If you really wanted to JUST wish those girls, you might wanna consider JUST wishing those guys as well.
4) Nowadays, Deepavali cards are a big No-No.
5) If a boyfriend did not wished his girlfriend “Happy Deepavali” via SMS on the eve of Deepavali (11.59pm), it would be a big issue although he may have an alternative plan of giving a special Deepavali card on the festive day itself.
6) In certain Deepavali stalls, about 75% of the Deepavali cards that are being sold or being prioritised would be those of actress Namitha or actress Trisha bending over and lighting up the “vilakku”. You could still find some cards which depict our gods but you have to dig through some of the cards as they would be ‘hidden’ down below.
7) Some of the Indian boys love to show off their talent in playing with fireworks, especially when there are many neighborhood Indian girls watching their stunts. Some would hold those “Panthu pattas” or “Nasi Lemak pattas” in their hands, aiming it at their friends and having a good glimpse at those girls, as if those girls are admiring their ‘stunts’. To those guys, get a life.
Sun Music channel will be flooded with tons and tons of anonymous Deepavali SMSes, with a jerk SMSing in between“Any ladies wanna chat?”. A good income for ASTRO on that particular day.
9) Theaters would be flooded with Vijay fans and Ajith fans, and these two groups would be exchanging some war of words in between. There is even a ready-made platform for them to debate further, which is called the Sun Music channel.
10) A lot of Indian rempits would be waiting at a particular petrol station, waiting for everyone to report in and travel all the way to Bangsar, Brickfrields or some theaters.
11) Two Indian aunties would be arguing on whose “Nei Urundei” is the best. Mind you, there is no double meaning here.
12) A lot of “nigga wannabes” would be loitering around, as someone need to remind them that “Today is Deepavali”.
13) No ASTRO, no Deepavali. Period.
Any other things that I may have missed?
*These are just my observations.

Some still prefer to send Deepavali cards..But I just HATE THE DAMN ACTOR/ACTRESS PICTURES ON IT……I wonder which idiot came up with that idea and i have no bloody idea what actor/actress got to do with Deepavali…..They do celebrate it ,thats all….I can’ t find a reason why their pictures have to be on Deepavali cards(not only Deepavali cards, friendster comments as well)…….
And ya,it’s very hard to find a card that the pictures the related to Deepavali….Sigh.
No 2 and No 7… Hahaha……
For the malaysian indians, there wont be deepavali without celebrities…… haha…
During my younger days, i’d always look forward to Deepavali. The days building up to it would see close relatives getting together making all sortsa ‘palagaram’ .While the ladies were in the kitchen busy cooking, the men would be in the living room chatting away and the kids outside playing. And thn of course, Deepavali shopping! Going for shopping in a huge group couldn’t get anymore fun, and of course, finally, Deepavali day itself, i remember my parents not failing to have an open house for a couple of years in a row, we invited friends and family and it was grand, i used to be so down when Deepavali was over.
Now sadly, this has stopped. Deepavali is about going to temple in the morning, thn the rest of the day would b in front of either the TV or my PC. Our local channels have in recent years failed to spur the festive mood. Deepavali advertisements are recycled by the big companies (with petronas an exception), the smaller ones have stopped advertising altogether, not even a simple greeting such as “Happy Deeavali” by hypermarkets such as Giant, Tesco, Carrefour whom without fail do it for the other festive seasons….maybe we are commercially insignificant to them i don’t know, but its happening.
Special Deepavali programmes on TV1,2,3 and NTV7 used to be interesting, now they are scarce and those available lack in quality. My non-Hindu friends (most of them) conviniently forget to even sms a greeting, despite me always wishing thm every Raya, CNY and Xmas. And a couple of days post-Deepavali whn they bump into me would even have the nerves to ask for ‘belanja makan’. Still no belated Deepavali greetings up to tht point.
From the morning of Deepavali, till the day’s end, feels just like any other day, ordinary, but yet i feel happy, because i still get to spend some quality time with my own immediate family members, and i believe thts all tht matters to me. Sorry if i had spoiled the festive mood around here, but this is happening, to me at least.
Happy Deepavali.
Totally agree with with ‘the truth’, i have some colleagues who dont have the decency to wish me but so daring to ask for cookies. Gosh….hate those people. I till now never fail to wish people i know either through sms, email, friendster or facebook.
Anyway, i have learnt to continue doing what i do and ignore those who feels ‘Deepavali’ is not so significant.
Ah, I’m on the No. 7 list. Buta.com
But not to show off to the girls la bro.. Just firecrackers seems to be more fun playing like that lo..ecspecially the rocket..
Lol…The rest is definitely what Malaysian Indians does.. Good observation bro..

Deepavali no more exciting as before..as I unable to go back home for celebration as well..I missed early morning wake up and oil bath, having breakfast with family, chill awhile then go to friends house..hmm..
Nowadays deepavali not like last time. Now the true meaning of deepavali also has been changed to ” Bizz-vali”.(time for make money).
Most of our Indians don’t know why we are celebration this light festival.
“yenna kodume tamila ithu”
Let me tell you this…I not agree with greeting card designer (also other printing company included our local news papers, magazine etc) print
GOD photo on the card this because not everyone of us will keep it forever. End of the day we can see our GOD photo at the road side, in the rubbish and so on.
kadavul thunilum iruppaar thurumbilum iruppar endru solvathundu…but atharkkage ippadi ya?
“kodumaiyilum kodumai… tamila ithu”
I like deepavali coz on deepavali only we can see so many tamil-funny-petronas-tnb advertisement..hahahah…remember this 2names? muniandy chinnadorai and muthusamy karupiah?
and i will sad too coz more hindi film will be aired in rtm and tv3 channels and less tamil movies….enna kodume p**de saar ithu?

Navin…the grandma lah the best
All in all…deepavali celebration seem to have differ from last time. nevertheless…reading your comments it shows that there are still some who don’t do the “hApPiE dIWAL! t0 aLL!! LuV yA! *HuGZ n’ kiSSeS”….stuff ! Glad for that.

This is absolutely true.I went to Little India to have lunch. And i couldn’t belive and have no idea why an actress & actor’s face got to do with deepavali?.Is Rama & Ravanan = Vijay is Rama & trisha is seethai?Or vadivellu is Ravanan & Asin is Seethai? Then how to fit Shreya in this league. How about Namitha? Is she the Ravanan’s sister?Whatever freaks!..
The same stuff were asked by my American colleague’s.They are wondering how this people (the actors/actress) related with Deepavali?I don’t know what to say so diverted the question and said it’s for marketing purpose.
This is embarassing.I can’t digest…can’t digest that Indians seems like can’t live without cinema.No food..never mind,no dress..never mind,no ic/passport also…never mind…but no CINEMA….daiiiii!!!!yedungada veecha arava!
Ohh forgot….No Sivaji The Boss Movie…burn the theather. This happend bro’s & sis’s.We all know that.
