Petronas Deepavali 2008 commercial
Every year, Petronas would never fail to impress us with their overwhelming Deepavali commercial. This is because their commercials would be very different from others, as it would be very down-to-earth, makes us to ponder on the deep meaning of the message as well as instilling a sense of awe; in which it gives a slap on our face each year, to ensure that we are moving on the right track, whilst doing the right thing.
Gone were the days where there would be a classical Indian dancer dancing for the infamous Dunhill Deepavali commercial. Gone were the days when Jack Nadarajah’s Deepavali show would be a must-see for every Indians during Deepavali. Ever since ASTRO engulfed the whole Malaysian Indian community, “Tamil movies” and “Tamil Celebrity Interviews” plays a major role in determining a Deepavali week to be an indeed, “Deepavali week”.
Putting that aside, let’s have a look at the 2008 Petronas Deepavali commercial:
No matter what, nothing beats this:

good blog . enjoy reading it
Ermm…
Are these people considered Indians?.
Those guys look like “50/50″ only & the way he said (the new pilot guy riding old bicycle) said “Peithevaren” like Malay fellow only?.
Whatever.Hope every Indian father in this country from now on will take example or inspiration from this ad.
haihhh..wonder how they get beautiful ideas like this every deepavali..
but, ‘muthusamy karupiah’ ad is a true classic as what u said bro..
hats off to petronas for coming up with 1 of a kind inspirational advertisement each year..
*yawn* boooooorrriiing….and corny.
Much preferred the “patti” commercial. Whoever did this year’s needs some lessons in both casting and directorship, while the actors need acting lessons.
Petronas won’t give Indians jobs, but will make commercials macam real aje…..
macha had an orange tee on….stereotyping…
from 3 min ( 1 week before diwali ) they will strink it to 30sec ( on diwali day ) , on the next day gone …. the story line similar to the raya ad. father & son thingy …. more father’s day ad….
Muniandy Chinnadorai is the best!!!
Deepavali ad = Petronas Patti ad!!
we have 2 give a credit 2 petronas 4 their adds..at least its better than goverment based rtm adv!!!!!!
@tzarina- ur statement is very ””encouraging”’
I don’t think they can come up with the classic muthusamy karuppiah any time soon. Its definitely the best.
And yes, we should give credit to petronas for at least taking the initiative to do the advertisements.
Isilah minyak di Petronas.
Brilliant commercial. Accurately depicts the current situation of Malaysian Indians in Malaysia:
1. Indian father and mother has to struggle to fork out their own money to make sure their child gets proper education despite the child being a possible deserving candidate for Government scholarships. Child becomes successful, and hes the product of the country’s ‘very open and level playing field’ policy. Now in the papers and the news, hes a Malaysian.
2.’Macha’. Since when all Indian guys had become brother-in-laws of the Nons? “Yo macha!!”, “Hey macha”, “OOo Macha”, stop calling me Macha, your not freaking married to my bloody sister! Trying very hard to fit in, calling us Macha’s in front, bt will fuck us from behind with every single opportunity knocking.
3. As ” Naturetech” said, the man who was the little boy looks like a Malay to me. Pretty much sums up the fact tht Indians dont have a place in Malaysian TV. Apart from Head n Shoulders advert, Merdeka, Deepavali and Indian products on Tamil channels, Indians NEVER make TV appearances. Now even in Deepavali adverts, their roles are being replaced.
Ive already started boycotting PETRONAS, hope more of you guys would follow as well. Trust me, you get better milage using SHELL. PETRONAS is a mere business venture, they are incapable of producing their own fuel. Though petronas monopolizes all the oil rigs in malaysia, its Shell’s technology they’re using. Petronas belongs to the Government 100% though they will whole-heartedly deny this, thus any adverts coming from them = adverts from the Government = campaigning for the next election. Even PETRONAS scholarships are based on the quota system.
@presley
tzarina is absolutely correct, esp on the matter of Petronas not recruiting Indians or denying them education scholarships, but would come up with a ‘beautiful’ TV advert for Indians annually. Petronas represents Malaysia: HYPOCRACY.
No matter what, no matter what wayang kulit they show.. I am not impressed. End of.
Whats the point of treating the citizens as second class 364 days of the year and then one single day they say, “Eh Deepavali la, lets make an ad shall we” kinda crap.
Those of you who think the ad is fine, great. Those who think “ooh Petronas cares for Indians”, go hang yourselves on a taugeh tree.
I don’t seem to understand why most of you people don’t appreciate any of these add. Why you all are always complaining and why we all start appreciating what we have and believe me you will see things in a better picture frame. I used to complain a lot about things and what i got in return was disappointment. Once i started appreciating the good things in life, more of those started to come in my life.
@tzarina….i usually agree with you but ……
its true maybe the add is not that professional. Its an advertisement not a serial or a movie. Its just for a minute or two. Why don’t you look at the message and stop whining about the “acting”
@sactyr… dont forget there are indian Petronas Scholars as well. If they really hate indian there wont be anyone studying in UTP and there a\wont be indian’s working at Petronas at all.
@inba
That means we cant use orange tee anymore. Will it be considered as supporting Hindraf
@Everyone
Mutusamy Karupaiyah is still the best
Cheer!!
Happy Deepavali

Satya,
I appreciate the “Muthusamy Karupiah” commercial. Alot. Because although the idea was simple and well known, the acting and the storyline were outstanding enough for a Malaysian-made Indian commercial. So, there. I appreciated THAT commercial.
But the latest one is a disappointment. I really did try to find something worth appreciating, but alas, failed. So I told the truth, based upon my standards of what a good local commercial is. Just because it was done for the Indians, it does not mean it deserves automatic applause and sucking up to. Criticism is part of improving oneself. Next time, they will spend more time, money and energy coming up with a better ad.
On the issue of Petronas itself: This is a government owned company, whose main aim is to make a profit. Profit in terms of Billions, that should be channeled to the whole of the country, instead of to mostly one race. Face it. Petronas itself, and the monies from Petronas is administered according to racial lines, in terms of education scholarships, business and job opportunities. This is the hard truth. And it should also be realized that the character of the father in the commercial represents every Indian who had to slog day in and day out to educate their children, without any aid from the billions that Petronas makes. The fact that Petronas does not have the guts to advertise that they played any part in the growth of the Indian child is simply telling.
When there is a valid reason to appreciate something, do appreciate it. Until then……………
I gotta agree with some of you.
Although the ad is nice, but the company which made that ‘ad’ is not that nice, at least, that is what we know.
In future, Petronas might wanna consider doing an ad which reflects the current trend or ‘culture’ of Malaysian Indians, such as those of “Muthusamy Karuppiah”. At least that kind of ad would become a major hit. BUT, asking Petronas to recruit more Indians into their company would be a big NO-NO for them, no matter how hard we beg. Hypocrite.
“Once i started appreciating the good things in life, more of those started to come in my life.”
Are you speaking about the ad and television programmes or about how wonderful our life is in Malaysia?
@the truth
I was talking about live and not the ad. I wonder why people who complain keeps on seeing more of that in their life and people who appreciate life keep on seeing the good part of life.
I know the fact that we are not leaving a wonderful life here in Malaysia. But once u start appreciating what we have at least we will get more of it and then i guess it will be more meaningful.
@tzarina
@Makkez I hate petronas for that as well.
Great job on the blog.
I never fail to read Makkez.com, Ragedindian.com (Durai) and tzarina’s when ever i am online.
Satya, what is there to start appreciating?
We aim to be a developed country but we are well on course to becoming an Indonesia, then Sri Lanka and finally Zimbabwe, in that order.
Don’t you see it guys? They are dangling the carrot in front of us, again. Last year they demolished a temple on the eve of Deepavali and everyone was “oohing” and “aahing” about them screening two movies back to back. This year they banned Hindraf and we are all tripping over with these advertisements.
For goodness sake, open your eyes and look out for what’s coming. Get out of your Astro and Friendster comfort zone and for once think how hard they are making for us to even get our days by.
Sheesh.. with the current mentality how are YOUR children even going to survive???
Yes I am complaining, but at least I am not living in an ignorance bliss.
Nice 1 from the truth.
Yes he’s absolutely right.Actually the “appa guy” or “the macha” should say “You tak apelah Mat.Awak punya anak tak belajar pun takpe”…and continue…”Saya kalau tak kerja overtime,nanti awak akan panggil “macha”…bukan kat saya tapi kat anak saya sebab anak saya akan kerja kat sini bukan sebagai pilot tapi sebagai tukang sapu”…continue…”Anak you tak pe lah,dia lulus ke,gagal ke,gerenti boleh masuk U,dapat kerja,rilek…kami bukan macam tu,dapat result baik pun kena bersusah untuk biasiswa,universiti,etc…..(dia sudah kadepe eran,jadi Anniyan)apa lu cakap,saya tak boleh beli dia sayap?Tak pe lah,i tak beli dia sayap pun tak pe,asalkan you tak beli sama dia kuih ketayap.You akan beli sayap guna gomen money,saya nak pi mane pulak?Lain kali hang panggil aku macha,ribut akan melanda keturunanmu.Sebelum aku bilang 10,baik ko lari dari sini,ok,ribut countdown starts now……….(selepas beberapa hari,macha jadi bos,itu bos jadi penjual ketayap…happily ever after,Indians rulez,muahahahaha…)
Sekarang Deepavali Nalvaazhtukkal!Dei,inime sayap patti pesuve…?
……ohhhh….another 1…
This might sounds a bit racist so bare with me.
Why you have to put a “50/50″ that confuse the Indians?.By the way,I’m not sure if he is an Indian or mamak?What happen to local actor/actress…i mean Indians…that can take the role in that ad.Are they dissapeared or hidden below the Petronas Twin tower or kidnaped by aliens?Baba’s,Alagappas,Gemini muruku mavu advertisements…those kind of stuff the local Indian actor/actress can do the intro but when it comes to national level…let it be Ad’s or cultural show…suddenly the Malay or Chinese can become an Indian one ahh?Malay-sia-sia wat.
Don’t believe me?.Take a closer look at the dancer’s at your nearest shopping mall if they held a cultural show.I bet the Malays will wear like an Indian and dancing like a “Monyet terbakar punggung”.While the sponsor will simply say “Can’t find Indian dancing group”.So WTF “Attam 100 vagai” is for?
i truely agree with Naturetech. mannin maithargal vazha vidungal..
however as other said, MUTTUSAMY KARUPIAH IS THE BEST. nothing can replace it in this moment.
)
the teenage boy is from penang..he is half tamil/half guju..but damn bantha since he his half guju…athu ellam kamdar family member
poyum poyum avanea antha add kulle pothu irukanga
superbujji how in the world you got his ID?.
So he’s A+B = C lah.No wonder Kamdar raise their end’s and ran their ad’s in Vaanavil.I know Kamdar belongs to the Northie’s but this is kinda new info.
cuz cuz….the mother is such a nice lady..she tought me in primary school…she is a tamil , had a tamil name…but the family changed her name to a guju one(since she is married 2 a guju)…the mom speaks such a fluent tamil…kids will act as if they have never heard the word tamil..
ellam romba bantha case..north yendre periya kombaa…
Superbujji,
You are extremely right from every angle.You know,i heard a story about North Indian’s point of origin.We Dravidan’s are considered so sophisticated in every aspects as our history were compared to Japanse,Vietnamese,Thai’s & so on.Sadly,the foreigners are so interested in our culture but we are heading the “Headless” MTV channel.
I’ll come back to the story or should i say a fact.Today i saw in the gov owned “The Star” about how a guju people will call “Diwali”..well..it’s starts with .. and ends with “Mubarak”?.As far as i know the word “Mubarak” is from Urdu right?.And Urdu is Afghanistan-Pakistan-North India comm language ?.Correct me if i’m wrong.
Again to the point.These people’s origin are from Middle east.That’s why until now you can see some singhs still living in Afghanistan.If you took a flight from Canada to New York and…and if you wearing a turban although you are a singh,you not gonna like the whole flight journey cuz 1000 eyes will be watchin your every movement.
