22 year-old Kugan died while in police custody

This post was meant to express my deepest condolences to the family of the late Kugan a/l Ananthan, regardless of what crime he did, who had died while being in police custody in Subang Jaya police station (20/01/09). It was purportedly reported that Kugan died due to asthmatic problem, although his family has denied that lame reason. Anyway, lets keep our fingers crossed hoping that the post-mortem report would eventually lead to the real cause of his death and those responsible for it shall be convicted. And finally, this case would be the latest addition to the “Malaysian Indian deaths in police custody“, which has already archived quite a similar number of cases for the past few years involving Malaysian Indians.
Lastly, for all those karat kaigels, beware guys! Anything can happen at anytime, although if you happened to be a nerd! By saying that, I hope you guys could understand what I meant.
May his soul rest in peace.

welcome to M’sia Darul Polis.
Sick bastards.
What happen yaar…Where we are going..Are we Indian has been defined as low class peoples in this Malaysian community….?? Is it we called “Negara berbilang kaum”…?? Immediate response and action must be taking to put the full stop for this crap.
i’m not dare to c the clip
takutnya nak tgk picture tuk pun.
how the guy felt when he got attacked.
*may his soul will revenge all those people who beat him till die*
huh~~!
heartless PDRM
Not something that surprises me, really. Especially since the man (Selangor CPO Khalid Abu Bakar) who claims Kugan died of fluid found in the lungs is the same idiot who was caught lying sometime ago when he arrested anti-ISA vigilers while the Negaraku was being sung. Kugan seems to be just another unfortunate victim added to the alarmingly growing statistics. These are the policemen who are trusted to protect us with their lives, instead they’re fast becoming a serious threat to our safety and lives. I wonder what the Home Minister has to say this time. It will be interesting, nonetheless…
Now, we need the education minister to protest against the war against humanity ( ain’t it ). This happened in our own soil and not much is being done to solve it. Sad. RIP son!
Another case of racism by our local cops. Surely, they used this as a reason to beat up and ultimately cause his death.
And a word of caution to all our other indian youths out there, stop committing silly crimes for petty cash, just like makkez said anything will and can happen! let this be a painful lesson..
[...] My heartiest condolences to the family of the late Kugan s/o Ananthan . May his soul rest in peace. [...]

HINDRAF. HINDRAF. HINDRAf.
Screw the malaysian government or bloody thavelers some people r still hopin on tat dey wud help!
Goodness gracious, God bless this boy’s soul..
..I wonder what’s next…
Atlast Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail has classified the death of Kugan Ananthan as murder !!!!
thnk GOD!!!
While police brutality should never be tolerated and is in no ways justified, our chap here is in no ways an innocent man just walking about when he was attacked by the police. Personally – and I know many wouldn’t agree with me – if his death encourages other fellow Indian guys to drop the life of crime and improve their lives, I’d say his death wasn’t in vain. Seems a little heartless, but I am absolutely sick and tired of opening the morning paper and reading about Indian thugs robbing, murdering, and raping others. They are the reason that Indians don’t get respect from other Malaysians, and the reason the police think they can get away with abusing other Indian prisoners.
So no, he’s no innocent. Like I mention earlier, police brutality is in no way justified, but I think that his victims would claim that he got what’s coming to him. He’s no innocent, and making him into a martyr is just painting a veneer on the real issues that affects the Indian community as a whole. We are the reason people don’t respect us.
@moog
The man concerned was just a SUSPECT, he was not even given the opportunity to be trialled, so how could you play god and say tht he’s no innocent?
Even people whom have had strong evidences against them for murder using a C4 bomb were given the chance to defend themselves in court and the prime mastermind is about to become ur PM in a couple of months time. Is that fair?
So how can you say such things about Indians? Do you actually think that all criminal activities in Malaysia are the work of Indians? Well you are absolutely wrong! The Indians are the ones whom are always unfortunate enough to get targeted and caught, whilst the others get away with the help of money and political ties.
As far as i can see, the only Indian who gets away with crime easily comes in the form of a certain bald man leading the so called political party aimed at protecting the Indians’ cause.
And the impression im getting right now is that YOU are probably one of his workDOGS.
Speechless..My deepest condolences to Kugans family.
Must DO something…Must teach the Fucking Govt n PDRM a good lesson !!!!!!
Where are we moving forward??????
Why Indians????????
He is oni 22…
DAMN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Malaysians consider the Gaza bombing by the Jews and Guantanamo bay detainees by US government as inhumane and violent. Than what you call this!!!! Is this all because we are Indians? I do agree that he is a fugitive due to car theft but he don’t deserve to die like this. He should be punished in the hands of the law. NOT like this!!!! Even a notorious child murderer would get a better treatment form our “respectable” PRDM force if he belongs to the other race!!!! NOW WHAT OUR FELLOW MALAYSIANS GOIN TO DO FOR KUGEN AND HIS FAMILY? Are they gonna keep their ears deaf and mouths shut? This is not the 1st time such case has happened to us. Only this time, PDRM failed to cover up as how they would do always.!!!!
Nattans killing tamilanz continue again?
make a full-stop guys for this all!

“So how can you say such things about Indians? Do you actually think that all criminal activities in Malaysia are the work of Indians? Well you are absolutely wrong! The Indians are the ones whom are always unfortunate enough to get targeted and caught, whilst the others get away with the help of money and political ties.”
Unfortunately, Indians do contribute to a disproportionate amount of crime, particularly violent crime in Malaysia. If Indians are the victims, odds are the oppressor is Indian too – e.g. Indian gangs harassing Indian residents in Klang.
One of the key reasons is that a segment of our young people are getting an inferior education (which is why they are looked down up and struggle to get jobs), and are more suited to street life in Chennai vs professional life in Malaysia. Sending children to a badly-funded Tamil school in a small town with insufficient teaching resources is not a recipe for success, yet many Indian parents continue to do so in the name of ‘culture’.
The police treat Indians so badly for a reason – they view us as ignorant of our rights. The recent rise of HINDRAF has highlighted many of the violations, but what about police abuses for all the years prior? We need to get our priorities straight, get our kids into national/private/international schools, to learn English and embrace modern culture. We should stop holding our young people back – e.g. girls not allowed to ‘dress up’ (instead being forced to choose between either a sari or a kurta), children not allowed to immigrate to the West etc. We need to rise up!
Another victim of PDRM…
Until when we going to be victim for this BN DOGS??
Really pityful when hear the victim mother crying…
Not again! I wonder when all this gonna stop. The mainstream newspapers are not giving much importance to this. Thank god we have the internet. It is high time for the IGP to take responsibility and resign togteher with the other goons. Let the Police Department be run by people who knows the job.
If this not called ethnic cleaning then what is called ethnic cleaning! The AMNO bastard continue to deny the fact and THE EM EYE C assholes continue to work with the mother fxxxes.
@Prasad
I know our community has to change, but just because these people cant converse in simple English/BM or are unable perform simple mathematical operations does not justify their killings under Police custody.
While we reach out to the weak and encourage them to get proper education, we must also at the same time stop all these son of bitches from harassing our community.
It is very easy for you to say this;
“We need to get our priorities straight, get our kids into national/private/international schools, to learn English and embrace modern culture. We should stop holding our young people back – e.g. girls not allowed to ‘dress up’ (instead being forced to choose between either a sari or a kurta), children not allowed to immigrate to the West etc. ”
How many can actually AFFORD to change as you’ve mentioned? Due to geographical and financial constraints, not everyone can afford to get quality education which is abundant in urban areas only.
As for migrating abroad, i trully support this idea, BUT how many of us actually made it overseas? Not everyone’s lifestory has a happy ending. In fact, most have suffered even more by going overseas. I’ve come across people whom had sold their houses and property in Malaysia, just to finance their migration plans only to have it not work out and return back to this country in dire state. Just because you’re an engineer/doctor/lawyer does not mean employment will come at ease overseas. Other nations including ours have employment policies, which clearly states that for professional jobs, unless no locals are able to perform specific tasks, only then will foreigners be recruited.
So if you see the big picture, only then will you realise how tough things are. Its always easy to talk, but right now we have short term problems to solve, and by bringing down your own community, you are not helping.
While what the police did is grossly unjustified and brutal, let be clear here, what was the root cause. This chap did bring police to 15 stolen cars, didn’t he??
I am quite sure, by looking at Tamil dailies, that more Indians get killed by another Indian more than by anyone else.
My nephew was killed over a simple “why are you guys looking at us” situation, something that stupid indians willing to get into a fight for. The culprit ran to India and can the parents run to HINDRAF, MIC or Anwar?? I am sure every Indian has a similar story to tell.
The questions that has been bugging me for sometime is “what is the role of reported 15,000 temples in this country that HINDRAF and other Indians fight for? What happened to all the Kalvi Yathirai, Kalvi Yagam’s etc, why our youth still end up being criminals.
Are they (temples) are any good in the first place. What do they teach Indians and Hindus.
1. Turn a criminal when you are desperate??
2. Kill another Indian/Hindu when you need to??
3. Lie when you need to for your own benefit (eg HINDRAF Memo)??
4. God will help Indians who don’t help themselves (but depend on MIC, PKR, HINDRAF, Govt, Anwar)??
5. Indians/Hindus can only survive with Handouts???
6. Pray and Pray until the cow come home and you future will be secured??
7. Spend thousands on prayers, ceremonies, jewelleries, functions but don’t spend on education???
8. Don’t study hard if you school is in poor condition??
9. Or Don’t study at all because god will lead you to the correct path??
10. God helps alcoholic Hindus who spend more on alcohol than their children’s education??
11. Emulate Vijay, Vijayakanth and look for blood when you feel threatened or challenged??
Or are Indians / Hindus now blame god for not helping since they have been praying for ages…
Also what is the role of Tamil school, which is suppose to teach all good cultural values to Indian kids so that they have a good future and become cultured individuals with good moral values?? If we say 90% of Indians go to Tamil School and 90% of Indians are Hindu’s, please reflect on the reality.. are they any good in the first place and are they actually worth fighting for.
Please go look at ourselves in the mirror and ask yourselves, stop pointing fingers.
Brothers,
I have had enough of all this.. stop being emotional and look at the root cause of all the issues related to Indians, it will somehow lead to our own weaknesses, rather than anything else. No point blaming BN, Police and in Future, Pakatan, for all the ills in the society..
@Balan
bla..bla…bla……………………………………………………………………….
If this were to happen to your brother or son, i bet your sorry face will be popping up everywhere demanding justice.
@Balan
Let me adapt an excerpt from your comment:
The questions that has been bugging me for sometime is “what is the role of reported 15,000 temples in this country that HINDRAF and other Indians fight for? What happened to all the Kalvi Yathirai, Kalvi Yagam’s etc, why our youth still end up being criminals.
1) Role of temples? What role are you talking about and how ‘temples’ could surprisingly save Kugan from losing his life? And, are you blaming those ‘reported 15000 temples’ for causing the death of Kugan instead of the police personnels that were involved?
2) Not all youths would attend the SMC-organised programmes and not all the attendees would end up being criminals in the end. As far as I’m concerned, criminals evolve from a big percentage of school dropouts. Agree to disagree?
Dear The truth,
I gave an example of my nephew murdered by another indian, I know how it feels, I was the first to see his body after his gory death in the hands of another Indian, much worse than what you saw here in kugan’s case.
If you know what your son or brother is actually doing in real life , you would have prevented this from happening in the first place. How many Indians bother what their children(youth) doing outside their homes..
Makez,
I ask here, what is the root cause, .. crime and what does Hinduism teach us, this is where the thousands of temples come in, do they actually usefull in creating god fearing individuals with good values?
when someone advocates closure of tamil schools, everyone jumps and says that tamil schools are producing excellent students and should be defended, so why Indians turn to crime…
dont give me crap of govt discrimination etc… try to answer my questions in my original post..We are so weak.. lack of values, depend on others… and blame others for all our own failures..Our religious knowledge is either poor or we simply feel committing crime is condoned by the religion..
I was a form 5 drop out too, I have been living in 8 different estates, worked there for sometime, and was a hardcore poor too once. I stopped blaming everybody else but me for the situtation that i was in. Then things changed.
I don’t agree with BN or Pakatan, they are oppotunist, none can help unless we help ourselves and the first step, identify the root cause and coming out of our self-denial.
@Balan
I’m sorry to hear about your late nephew, but the point is Kugan’s case is different. He deserved a trial like every other criminal, instead he was murdered in the hands of the police.
What makes it more sick is that the head of the Police department, medical doctors and politicians had earlier on denied their wrongdoings by giving out false information. This shows how untrustworthy our leaders and authorities are.
Has it not occured to you why this only happens to Indians? Have you heard of Chinese or Malay criminals killed under police custody? What appears to be clear ethnic cleansing with the aim of creating fear within the Indian community is in fact holding back the majority of Indians in Malaysia from progressing.
It is ironical, that in order to so call ‘gain respect’ of others in Malaysia, the Indians have to up their standards, BUT in order to do this we must first stop the harassment and deliberate marginalization of Indians in the country, by the very same people whom we are trying to win ‘respect’ from.
dear all,
No matter who come to power, it can be BN or Pakatan, we( indians) will not get any benefit.Brothers, lets help our community by all means where ever possible.Lets decicate our priority to tamil schools and set our future generation to the right path.
ok guys….
get a propr leader n then we cn c to it…….until then,we wait……..juz wait to strike……and to kugans family,my deepest condolences……..may urr soul rest in peace…………..
nt all dropouts n indians who come from poor or less sosial ammenities only turn into thugs n criminal…….
there are educated guys who also turn into gangsters n thugs….so,u cnt just blame the dropouts n un-educated….
most indians say they must be brave n must fight for our rights…..
nt with knives n weapons….WITH INTELECT N INTELIGENCE…….
as far as i knw,most of us here who are posting n giving coments in makkez have the vision….my family members are always reading the posts here n telling it out to the indians who dont knw….are all of us doing our part??we should……….
we must also make sure all our indians are educated in the proper way…nt the same way tat is motivation……motivation here,there n everywhere…..bt does it work??it is only by using a good example tat we cn help indians to have the eager to be a better man……kugan’s case is a good start…..we should use the indians instinct(tat is very powerful)in order to be able to get the indians to rise………..nt get angry over spilt milk….bt try to make sure the milk is never spilt again
@the truth,
I deplore Kugan’s death in custody, no doubt about that. Do you read Tamil Dailies, almost everyday an Indian is murdered and as usual another Indian is likely to be the culprit.
Why no one wants to focus on death of innocent victims in the hands of another Indian, rather than once in a while death in custody, even that a suspected criminal. Indians are conducting far more serious ‘ethnic cleansing’ on their own rather the anybody else.
My questions is how people like kugan, ended up there, in police custody in the first place.
(He was remanded only after the magistrate was convinced with the evidence produced that he was involved in crime and he even led police to 13 stolen cars)
What harrasment, discrimination if you lead the right path all the way? I have never been harassed by anyone. I chose my own positive path, so did my fellow drop out brothers.
Marginalisation in Malaysia is a word used by those who are weak. When thousands of immigrants are willing to die to come to Malaysia, why Indians needs to resort to crime to survive, what marginalisation?
Example, My brother in-law is a standard 6 drop out, he earns 10-15K a month driving lorry, you know why and how? He is disciplined and took on orders that requires delivery at 4-6am. And you know what, this particular delivery was done by numerous other Indians before and none are able to be disciplined enough to deliver the goods on time and was relieved of their duty, mainly due to indiscipline.
So, there’s no excuse why we should fail and resort to crime when opportunities are plenty unless of course if Indians want to find excuses and someone to blame for all their miseries.
Things are not like those days, there’s plenty of avenue for drop outs to further their studies, even if they fail their SPM, like me. It’s just that whether we are willing to go the extra mile or do we want easy money by committing crime.
BTW, where were all the politicians when a mother lost 4 of her children who drowned the other day. Even Nik Aziz was to donate to kugan’s somewhat well to do family. Misplaced priorities or being opportunist??

@Balan
“What harrasment, discrimination if you lead the right path all the way? I have never been harassed by anyone. I chose my own positive path, so did my fellow drop out brothers. ”
Out of the 2 million Indian population in Malaysia, not everyone is as fortunate as you and me. I can safely say that more than half had and will continue to suffer from the evil ruling regime.
“Marginalisation in Malaysia is a word used by those who are weak. When thousands of immigrants are willing to die to come to Malaysia, why Indians needs to resort to crime to survive, what marginalisation?”
No. Being ignorant is the characteristic of a weak person. And you sir, unfortunately, fall into this category of people. When u speak of of ‘immigrants’, may i know who you are talking about? Indons? Bosnians? Pakis? Banglas? You obviously don’t have a clue about what’s happening, do you? Wake up ex-schooldropout! There are more Indons in this country then people of your own kind, while Indian(India) IT expatriates are being chased away, unqualified garbage from Indonesia are welcomed in to make the numbers. While Bosnian Muslims were under attack, Mahafuck the PM at tht time brought in countless numbers of Bosnian refugees to work and settle in Malaysia. At the same time Somalia( a muslim nation as well btw) was in crisis, but no offers of help came from M’sia. Bosnia is a European country where its people are mostly caucasians whilst Somalia is an African nation. I think you can figure out your self as to why this happened. So what immigrants are you talking about? Malaysian Indians are as good as being immigrants themselves. Born and bred in the country, but treated like 3rd underclass citizens. Even our chinese friends can see this, so i don’t understand what exactly is blinding you .
“Things are not like those days, there’s plenty of avenue for drop outs to further their studies, even if they fail their SPM, like me. It’s just that whether we are willing to go the extra mile or do we want easy money by committing crime.”
I am happy for you and your bro-in-law, but this fairytale is by no means an excuse for young Indians to neglect their studies may it be in primary/secondary schools or in university. Instead of them thinking that they could just drop out of school and with a tinge of luck and ‘discipline’ they can earn wonders by driving lorries at 4 am in the morning, they should instead dscipline themselves while at school, do well, get a professional degree, and earn 10K-16K or more with private companies under much flexible working hours, they can then promote themselves with hardwork and determination until other countries are after their services.
Dear Truth,
I don’t really understand your point. my arguement is that Kugan would not have been in contact with the police if he did not do something wrong. That’s the root cause.
I also questioned why Indians are indulging in crime more than anyone else, apart from immigrants. Most anwers – discrimination, marginalisation etc. I say that’s not entirely right as they are various ways to survive, of course education is part of it, those drop outs (as mentioned by Makkez) can still study and not resort to crime.
You said half of Indians ( approx I million) continue to suffer from evil regime? what suffering ?
I am quite sure that people around me and extended family & relatives , who are mostly not rich or professionals, are having a far better living standards than say 10-15 years ago. And my examples and observations are no-fairy tale.
Maybe it’s just that many want to feel discriminated just because they are too negative, opposing for the sake of opposing without thinking (read support anwar ibrahim without thinking that for 20 years he was with Mahathir) and without realising they are in fact living a reasonably good life.
Dear Truth,
I am not entirely against all this protest against the ruling party etc, but let’s not be in denial and generalise.
I rest my case.
Those in denial will continue to be in denial, no matter how one argues.
PS. I also note that Indian bloggers are hardly seen amongst the mainstream blogging community. Wonder Why?
“Dear Truth,
I don’t really understand your point. ”
You should have stayed at school.
HELLO!!!!
we are talking about a indian guy who was nt given a chance to defend himself bt was killed without trial…..if he was given a death penalty by the court,we cn accept it….bt he was KILLED in police custody…….

Damn, I have totally forgotten the ongoing debate that is going on here. Sorry about that. Anyway,
“My arguement is that Kugan would not have been in contact with the police if he did not do something wrong. That’s the root cause.
Well, let us go back to the root issue shall we. We are not saying that Kugan is our hero, neither are we cursing him for the severe crimes that he did but the fact remains that he was ‘killed’ whilst in police custody. Let us talk about that and not deviating the whole issue to the ‘root cause’. In fact, if we are to talk about the ‘root cause’, it would be a never-ending story as the lists would be endless, ranging from peers, family, education wise and even the role of temples as what Balan had pointed out. It is even remarkably surprising that the number of Indians died in police custody is way too much compared to other races. Why is that so?
And Balan, you kept on giving examples which are based on one side view, such as the death of your nephew and the success-in-life-story of your brother-in-law. I pitied the former story and applauded the latter story but if you happened to think out of the box and look at the bigger picture, you will notice that not every school dropouts can be like you and think like your brother-in-law.
As such, blaming temples and etc will do no good. Take an example of this: You are driving a car and you hit another car, well, that is called an ‘accident’. You are driving a car and another car came and hit you from the back. That is called an ‘accident’ too, although it was not your fault.
