8-year-old Tamil girl married a frog

Tamil Frog

A few days back, I posted an article on how a 9-year-old Tamil girl had successfully became a Microsoft Certified professional by passing the MCP examination and I gotta say that it made me happy and proud of her achievement. Well, that is a different story. This time, I came across yet another interesting news, but this news neither made me proud nor happy with what ‘she’ did, or to be precise, what had been done to her. Well, as funny as it may sound, it seems that an 8-year-old Tamil girl had been married off to a frog! You heard that right, it’s a frog, the creepy-looking four-legged amphibian creature!

TAMILNADU (20/1/09): The annual ritual of getting a girl married to a frog organised in Pallu Puthupattu village on the Tamil Nadu – Puducherry border is an interesting meeting of fairy tale and real life.

On the first Friday of Thai (Tamil month) every year, a girl of Pallu Puthupattu village is married off to a frog that is fished out from a temple tank.

On Friday 8-year-old R Vigneswari of the village was married to a frog that was fished out from a Sri Muthu Mariyamman temple.

At the wedding the residents adopted all the rituals that are followed during a normal wedding. The people residing at western side of Sri Muthu Mariyamman temple were considered as relatives of frog. They visited the residence of the bride, Vigneswari and obtained permission of her parents for the marriage.

I am in no position to justify whether their belief/ritual is right or wrong but practically, it is total crap and even a 3-year-old kid would be laughing at the above news. Talking about what happened, why don’t we check out the reason given on why it happened?

The local residents believe that performing such marriages will protect them from evil forces and ailments. An elder Pachaiyammal said: “People were conducting such marriages for many centuries now. We believe that Sri Mariyamman would protect us from evil forces if such marriages were conducted annually.” Villagers said that according to legend, the people here had suffered from various hardship and a large number of children and others died following outbreak of cholera and other ailments in the village.

When they offered prayer to Sri Mariyamman, the goddess appeared in their dream and suggested them to conduct ‘divine marriage’ every year. In the dream the goddess said, the marriage must be conducted between Lord Shiva, who would be a reincarnation as a frog and live in the temple tank, and herself, as she would reincarnate herself as a girl child.

Don’t blame their culture. Don’t blame their mentality. Blame that elder Pachaiyammal and her fellow colleagues as these type of kelevis would be the mastermind behind such primitive ritual(s) and the reason it is being held until now! Well, even in our country, I won’t be surprised if these kelevis will strive hard to pour out their primitive lessons to the youngsters and would expect them to sit and listen to whatever they are saying.

Anyway, while this issue causes no harm to me directly or indirectly, but as an Indian of Tamil ethnicity, I am deeply ashamed of what they are doing, as the above news had been highlighted in many foreign sites and had even became a laughing stock for some. Yes I agree, even I couldn’t help myself laughing at the first place. Heck even Sri Mariyamman would be doing the same thing by now. This news would be a pure example of how a dream could be manipulated in a wrong way by fellow village Indians and thus feeding themselves with sheer stupidity by implementing ‘the message in that dream’ into their culture.

Well guys, even I had a dream last night. In my dream, Sri Mariyamman appeared and told me that half of my commenters shall marry an ant for the sake of prolonging their lives. Any volunteers?

8 years old. A child, married to a frog. Nice comment btw Mr/Ms/Mrs, Asshole. Proud of you. This is not a fucking joke. Blame the parents for not having brains and backbones to stop this madness. not the whole community. I am a Tamilian and I’m proud of it, regardless of the stupidities tossed to us by some idiots (especially Vijayakanth and pudungi Perarasu). Truthfully, I’m proud to see the comments by you guys. Coz by ur comments, I see changes in our culture to a better way of life. I’m sorry if I was too harsh Asshole, but dont give ideas about an 8 year old child sticking frogs in her vagina. That’s juz plain sick.
