I got this forwarded email with the subject line “Muar Kali” yesterday and at first, I thought it was a name of a person. But then, it seems that the email was all about our god “Kali” in Muar, Johor. There was not much details about this ‘event’ as all the contents (attachments) were purely photos. Before that, let me tell you something. I am the kind of a person who would ignore most of the forwarded emails that I receive and I would only read a few of them once in a blue moon, and that is, randomly. The same goes to this email.
The reason I’m saying so is because this email might be old, in such a way that it was once circulated around 1 year ago, 2 years ago or even 4 years ago. So, if by any chance, the following photos might be familiar to you, kindly apologise my ‘slowpokeness‘ and hope that those who haven’t seen them before shall be having a good time viewing them.
Based on the photos, I’m having a hard time accepting the fact that she is undergoing a trance as I feel that some sort of an exorcism act is being carried out in the photos above. Seriously, do the photos give an impression that it is a part of a religious process? I seriously wonder what eating animals/sucking their blood got to do with our religion and gods although I do understand the true nature of god “Kali”. Goddess Kali has 18 forms and is incarnation of Goddess Durga. 18 Kali includes Vadapathra Kali, Mayana Kali, Uthira Kali and Chamundeswari. Each has their own story of forms. All the forms taken to destroy evils. But, what we’ve seen in picture here is nothing to do with Goddess Kali. This is totally human act. God don’t need food, water or anything that human consume. im lali and live in australia but travel back to malaysia often cause i have family there. I guess having lived here all my life i find all this intriguing. I come back for thaipusam every year and have seen some intersting things too.
But what I find interesting is the fact that everything I see as someone who hasn’t been brought up in Malaysia I find contradict hindu ideals and principles. I agree with durai and even mr.saavadi with a lot of their comments other than the vulgar stuff..
I guess I was very disappointed seeing this especially in light of the recent hindraf issues malaysia’s been having. As Indians in Malaysian we’re upset that our temples are being knocked down but aren’t we just giving the government more ammunition against the hindu religion and indian people? I mean they can always turn around and give another pathetic reason and further knock down another temple. I guess for every problem there’s a cause for it and I believe such behaviour fuels it.
In terms of kali amma. I am a fervent devotee of her and other than her protecting me as a mother with the things I have been through in my life I don’t think she has in anyway told me to drink blood to prove my devotion. Also I feel that a lot of people in Malaysia the practises especially in regards to penance a quite extreme and even people in India do not practise such measures as ardently as those in Malaysia. I know this for a fact because I have been to India and spent a lot of time there. Even if they do they fast and pray and meditate. They abstain and try and concentrate on becoming one with god through meditation and having a clear mind. Not through violence and blood. It’s all a bit too extreme.
Every Amman temple in south India has a story. Kali amman does too. In Kerala there’s a temple where all people that are possesessed are placed before her and then a excorcism is done at night. They say that she had gone to war and immortalised herself in stone to protect the town. Like somoen earlier said she has over 100 avatarams and in India those “REAL” avatarams are present as she immortalised herself in stone and ‘HUMANS’ have worshipped her and felt she needs a temple and build a temple around her. Even as kali, she is still a mother …… no mother would want any of her children to do such things….

The blood drinking ritual is known as Kutti Kudithal. This is an ancient practice.
There are many people who disagree with such rituals. This includes myself, however, there should be reasons behind such rituals.
Sometimes during trance, it is not the deity which takes over the body. It could be the servants of the deity itself.
Such beings may require fresh blood in order to sustain itself.
We must not forget that Kali is a deity which is both the harm and the cure. I hope you understand.

In hindurism there is no room for such ritual of offering blood. I only come across such rituals in Kaval Deivam temples such as Kaliaman Temple and Appa Temple. Some years back when i was sishapillay for APPA whereby every weekend i will serve APPA in arul vakku ellai.
During my 03 years serving the Appa temple i have came across many issues affecting man kind due to black magic that was used to strike by their enemies. In this material world humans are using this method to take revenge on the other person..In the temple there will be sacrifices of goat and chicken for Appa.. In Munieswaran avatharam, there was father who will take blood. Therefore, whenever we do sangiyam for those possess by evil spirit, we actually brought them to this APPA and we do the sangiyam infront of his statue. This Appa we call VEERA PATHIRAN not the Lord SHIVA guard but this another Munieeswaran avataram. During that day we will call that APPA and he will choose who suppose to slaughter the fresh goat. Once the person chop off the goat head, Appa wil carry the goat and drink the blood.
Whatever they consume during the trance it not affect human body as they will take with them once they decide to leave. The person who got trance father, will drink beer or stout non-stop while consulting the person whom having problem but once the father decide to leave and the person will gain conscious, he will not feel intoxicated from alcohol. We are just an instrumental for them where they need human body to communicate to man kind directly. This is another form of god communication with the man kind… Again which is right and which is wrong..

Ok, I am not the expert on the police on blood sucking thing but my understanding is that for the Johor area, it all started in the Segamat Maha Kaliamman temple where the form of Kalima there is Badhra Kali. Heard that the old lady in trance used to have penchance for blood during the festival but that she has since passed on. In the past there were 30-40 goats offered but heard that this has dwindled since her demise. In fact, the temple is having its festival on 11-12 Jul 09 and unlike the Muar Kali, there is no firewalking in the Segamat Kali.
Someone asked about whether Mariamman asked us to walk on fire. Fair enough…did Murugan ask us to carry the kavadi? But I fire walk because I personally believe that this will please HER as I regard her as my MOTHER. Rightfully or wrongfully, as long as I am not hurting anyone by my act, that’s my choice. The same for Angapratatchanam or mudi kanikai….so long as it comes from the heart, it is between me and HER.
Forgot to add that people think that Kalima’s power is greatly enhanced by blood or that the Devi requires blood for rejuvenation. Yes, there’s a story about Raja Rajeswari creating Kali to suck the demon’s blood from the demon as each droplet would transform into another demon. Sadly, this is carried in modern times. Like the brutal slaughtering of buffalos to renact the act of Durgai killing Mahishasura.
But there’s nothing as horrid as what I heard about the Periyachi puja in India. Before the puja, a pregnant goat about to deliver is brought before Perchaiyee and the womb is ripped apart and the kid taken out. The poor goat is then sewn back, placed in a basket and carried out the temple 3 times (karagam concept) and then later brought before the Peiyachi and then chopped off. The kid is then either bashed to death on the floor or buried alive in the temple compound. If you think that chopping off a live goat is bad, I think this is the ultimate cruelty. Why must man inflict all these pain on harmless animals. Did Peichi ask for that? Like what Lord Buddha said, the priest who chops off a goat’s head will be borne a goat in the next life to be chopped off by others. For those who inflict such cruelty on animals, I dun know if they will be protecetd by the dieties as these acts are done for the dieties. Ok, I am no saint as I am not a vege but at least please do not inflict and torture animals. Lord Buddha said that all animals like human beings have feeling and they are also afraid to die. My frens who witnessed goat bali in Kalima temple told me that the goat is crying and trembling when it is brought before the altar. The eyes remain open for a while after the head is chopped off. Is that really what God wants?

This year’s festival is on 8th and 9th August and I will be attending it as I already agreed with my uncle to go. However, don’t think that I can bear to view the goat sacrifice…not so much the blood but feel very sorry for the goats. I will report back after attending the festival.

I myself have been to the temple in Malaysia.At that temple ppl cut goats and offer them to Kali goddess in the evening and the next morning,those who have come to the temple have a feast on the goat. The max time of any entity stays in human body during trance is 30min. Anything beyond it …….. chumma oru nadippu thaan. Try to pinch the toe of the person in trance… you will know the difference.

Hi, this is Angali Devotee reporting….as I am posting from home, am posting under another name……
I just came back from the Muar Kali festival held on Saturday and Sunday. Without much ado, let me just cut to the chase:-
1 Apparently after the pictures circulated on internet, there was a complaint lodged with the Malaysian government and Muar and Segamat Kali temples were told by the government to stop the cruel practice. As a compromise, we were not allowed to see the actual the slaughtering of the goat and drinking of the blood by the medium (let’s call her Miss Kali-wannabe). The staff would hold up sarees to block our view while it happened. Cameras and phototaking were banned and the staff were very aggressively shouting at people threatening to confiscate the cameras. Heard that in last month’s festival, Segamat Kali Kuil also started using yellow cloths to cover the blood sucking.
2 A total of 30 goats were offered. The first goat head was placed below the granite kali statue. Understand that in the past, all the goat heads will be lined up in a row but I guess they now want to tone down the gruesomeness of the act. I felt sorry for the goats – early in the afternoon, I saw some of the people in my group helping to drag the goats and they told me the goats did not want to go probably they knew what was in store for them. They either had to be carried or 2 persons would each hold a horn and carry them that way. The cooked mutton was offered as padalyal the next day and then to all after frewalking. I confess I ate it and later was admonished by my group member who said I should not have eaten it if I had objected to the act of bali ?. I felt rather guilty and bad after that.
3 Offering started at 12 midnight and continued into about 2 am. Before that, there was the ritual of hot oil splashing. Then the show started with Miss Kali screaming and yielding a sickle and breaking into a Kali dance. Whilst she is not poised like a ballet dancer, she certainly knows how to wave a sickle ?. The sanctums of Kali and Ayya were opened with full view of the slaughtering. The other sanctum a little further away with Vinayagar, Mariamman and Nagarajah was not closed but there was no view of the slaughter. I would have thought this sanctum would have been shut. Curiously, from where I stood outside the barricade, the utsava moorthy of Kali also appeared to be covered with saree so she could not see the slaughtering. My take is that since this is the form which goes out in the chariot procession, they wanted it to the calm form? There was another statue of Kali/Durga (?) riding on a tiger outside the Kali sanctum which was also covered with saree. A rather naïve thought – the Goddess can still see even if you use a cloth right?
4 Observation – One of the guys in my group guy screamed after he was in shock by the sight of the blood curdling scream of Miss Kali and he stuck out his tongue and foamed at his mouth. Me and his sister had to move him away from the scene. We applied some kungkuma on him and he was ok. It bewilders me why a lot parents allowed their children to watch the goat bali?
5 Now on Miss Kali. Much as I am tempted to write nasty things about her, she seems quite a nice girl. Think she is about 20 years old. On the next morning before timithi, she was walking around and at close view, she is sweet, pretty and petite – please don’t flame me for writing this. I observed her interacting with others and she had a quality of innocence – I don’t know if she was putting up an act? When she came to collect donations from us, I peeped at her toes and she is confirmed single!
6 Madhav actually asked if anyone would marry the girl. Think so leh! Understand that for the Segamat Kali, the grandmother passed it to daughter in law then to grand daughter who after she got pregnant passed it to her married sister in law. So it seems no problem getting hitched so long as you are a (rich) vampiress? Move over Paris Hilton…..
7 I thought Ms Kali would be leading the firewalking since she was unlikely to be reprising her blood sucking act in broad daylight. The procession was instead led by another lady in trance who stuck out her tongue and walked like a Kali. Later, I saw the lady medium giving arul vakku at the Vinayagar sanctum.
8 Bit of history about Muar Kali Kuil. The old man who started this Kali temple also has a Karumariamman temple a short distance away. His son in law was the one who started the slaughtering and later became very rich owning a few houses. Later, he passed the baton or “duty” to Miss Kali, who is believed to be a relative. The SIL also started another Kali shrine outside his house. Despite the bloody event, the saving grace was that I witnessed something quite sweet at the Karumariamman shrine- they brought a cow to the door of her shrine and we were allowed to take the fruit offerings from Amma and feed the cow. We fed it with apples, bananas, oranges etc. Apparently, the Karumariamman sanctum directly faces the cow stable and the cows and calves are deemed to be her children so they have the privilege of eating the fruits from her ?. I love Malaysian shrines in that we are allowed to place garlands on the deity and touch the deity. It’s like as if one has personal access to the deity.
9 The temple seems quite “rich”. The people in the barricade which helped in crowd control, policing enforcement of banning phototaking and lifting the sarees to block the view of slaughtering/drinking all wore glossy Muar Kali badges which looked very professional. Understand that the old man and his SIL each owns a few houses each. Ironically, during the firewalking, a very little boy behind me asked his father if the temple was very rich. Don’t know what prompted him to ask this question!
I hope this has given everyone more understanding to the background behind this Muar Kali. Personally, I also object to goat or any other form of bali but I wanted to witness it myself for the experience. Like someone said, hope that such acts will be stopped in due course………………

I know that this blood drinking thing happens in Trinidad at some of the temples there. From what ive seen is that the manifestations themselves pick up the goat and suck the blood and throw it behind them. Im not disputing anything……….a tomato will always be a tomato no matter which way we say it right?
The extracting of a kid from a mother’s womb is really horrible and in my humble opinion, no kind of mother whether she be Kali ma or not will ask for this. I;ve never heard of it happening, but it does!
I am to wonder how much more cruel can we get. I could come to terms with the offering of animal and the drinking of blood………the explanation someone gave (sorry i cant recall, and gosh its so muchto go thru) is that once the taste of it, always the taste of it (in a nutshell, so dont go screwing me ok).
i would like to know more about Kateri ma……….its so difficult to get anykind of info on her. i heard her name means vampire, but there must be more than just the meaning of the name.

There was a long and extensive discussion in the Lord Muneeswarar group on a posting regarding Periyachi vs Kateri. If you are not a member of that group, I believe you can still google and read the thread from there.
Like Periyachi, she is supposed to be a goddess to the asuras (demons) but later elevated to Goddess. She is also dressed in black saree and animal sacrifices are offered to her in India. She can be found in Amman temples in India. In some Amman devotional movies, Kateri is depicted as the Gooddess whom the villain/baddie seeks to get his power.
In the thread of the Lord Muni newgroup, I remember reading that Periyachi and Kateri are enemies in that one represents good and the other evil etc. I think you should google and read the thread.

I was invited to a page in facebook “to stop the muar kali ritual” then I realised such an interesting blog has been goin on for months.
Many were right and many were wrong, worse some were simply immature in expressing themselves. All this voice down to one thing. WE INDIANS DON’T HAVE PROPER RELIGIOUS STUDIES. Christians attend bible classes, muslims attend religious classes to understand thier religion and cultures better, but we jus follow some temple elders or priests and indulge in a falseful practice which may or may not right. This deviate us form the actual truth. That’s why we are minority coz many of us have converted and married away from our religion. I’m not against inter racial marriages but what causes this is our lack of understanding of our own religion. we cant even answer factually why such rituals are being performed rather we just condemn it which can be misinterpreted by the younger generation and they choose to be free thinkers. why??? It’s bcoz of US. This same agurments fights have been around for centuries. Till now we have even come out of such debate on who is right n wrong, that means we are still primitive thinking. Don’t blame rituals, our mindset of accepting others have not changed yet..
In the begining, man were assinged different duites then these duities became their caste then the caste became their cultures and cultures created rituals. Many died proving thier superiority towards other caste / culture, sadly we are still fighting over the same issue after 1000′s of years later. Like wat many said here, we are in technological era, that does not mean the men can concieve. certain rituals may have to stay the way it is. Im not supporting the grusome rituals but non of the post explaining clearly why such rituals have to be done ( with facts ) rather we fire each other claiming the better bombading post towards someone ( a few supports ), is the truth. This is exactly wat happened many many years ago, we still in the same mode.. this is saddening.
A king worships shiva, that kingdom must to follow ( even if they like it or not ). The chief priest sets a culture the caste / follows must follow. The village head slaughters a goat for a ritual the whole village must follow. This is how all our culture and rituals were born. so don’t blame the ppl who may still be following this.. if we want to prove them wrong, please do it with proper religious education centre.
Don’t just follow satgurus ( not mentioning anyone in particular ), ask valid Q’s and get valid answers. Travel places to understand our religion. Don’t just sit back blog and fight over who is right n wrong ( without facts )
Many of us ask this Q : did god ask us to do this and that? such Q’s is really lame. does a baby ask mom for milk, gals: do u ask ur boyfriend’s what u want for birthdays’s and valentine day. True love, passion and devotions is all about giving the most we could, smetimes it sounds crazy but that’s the truth from ur heart. Each years we want to do more and more to show our devotions. There are our religions doing this as well, crucufing themselves jus like jesus, tatoo and piecing rituals in thailand and even prepared to die while on thier pilgrimage to mecca and a group of muslims who piece themselves in trances ( in some arabic country, i guess ) Watch more discoveries of other religions then we know such ritual are still practised in all over the world amoung all religions.
All this voice down to FAITH, In my observance,
1) The big temples the rich will be praying to vinayagar, murugan, saraswati. lashmi, narayanan very vedic prayers. They understand such methodological rituals.
2) The smaller temples, the commoner worship not really understanding the chanting or rituals, therefore he just leaves it to the priest and trust watever the priest says and does..
3)for those village temples, as to my understanding they are those who have been following the sacrificial ritual, wich is passed down by village cultures. villages are the places where many of the demi god were more needed due to its life styles.
So friends, it’s wrong to accuse these rituals even if they seem grusome. In our myths, kannapa naar offeres Lord Shiva meat ( wild boar) when Lord Shiva’s eye bleed he replaced it with his eyes, moreover he even stepped Lord Shiva’s eyes in the process. this is also a form of faith express in his ways…
so to all my Hindu brother and sisters, lets change the way we think. lets start a proper Hindu religious studies site with quality information for all. In that way, we may reduce all this misunderstanding.

Ok,biar saya jelaskan sikit,Kaliamma or Aiya is powerful Gods,for those who know them.Drinking blood is not them,they have theirs own team or groups to take care who helping us in solving our problems.First of all do we ever think God needs food?No they don”t.Some of Jin,Satan or whatever evil that our Kalima or Aiya captured will be keep by them as their assistance to help them and obey them.
The blood,meat and watever thing is actually for these things and not for Kalima or Aiya.Because thiese evils obey their order and do the job given to them,they need to give food.So,during festival Kalima or Aiya will be present together with theirs Konco.BUT,only their konco will enter into the persons body with permission from Kalima or Aiya and drink the blood with supervised by Aiya or Kalima.And during Arul Vakku,God will be enter in the persons body and not these evils.So you people now know the different between God and Evil?
hie.. im kinda new here. im agree with mike74.. Wat he said is true.. im not trusting such prayer yet have toa agree that such prayers are exist all over the places in Malaysia. just not that popular.. my place do have such prayer which i don’t really upon them.. i gt an lesson wen i was scolded by this priest of a vedic temple wen i was talking bout this kinda practices.. he told me that all these things based on the people’s believe. older times, people in village in india believed that the god only will be happy by way of offering such thing as blood.. so that kinda believe that has been carried all the way till 2009.. but then this prayers even though exist, it cannot be rationalize by saying that a practice of our ancestors since we have opportunity to learn and know Hinduism well and not stick to the old practice which is not relevant.. another thing, its all bout a person’s believe.. ive brought up by my uncle who is a priest( gurukkal) .. he thought me that god is nt about rituals but about the faith and believe.. a person cannot be judge as religious if he goes temple every single day and person cannot be said as not religious if he nvr go temple.. god is inside everyone. wen u thinks good n being good witout being prejudice or selfish, even ur nt going temple god is there and ever ur give blood or shower him wit tones of milk but ur heart is full of hatred then there is no point of going temple every day..

Achu-Muruku: Ermmm… If you think this is sensible, right and straight, why do you have to put it up here? I believe the reason this discussion started is to enlighten the commoners on why this rituals are done, what are the benefits of doing and what have you achieved. None of this will be answered unless you question… and yeah I believe the are questioning and why are you so emotional in answering these question?

Achu-Muruku: Me personally prefer being a spiritual person rather than a religious person because Hinduism is to deep and the practices vary from place to place, so I rather have GOD in my heart,mind and soul and visit temples during festivities than to practically live in a temple without knowing the significance. Achu-Muruku: If you have god in your heart while you’re in a temple, how could you actually realize what are the girls wearing and the communication between the girls and boys in the temple? I thought a mind of a person should be pure to unite with the godhead but how this comparison and all other thoughts actually ring in your head while in prayers? Lol… god should not only in your heart and mind, when this happens it will be reflected on your physical self, character and your speech. YEAP, I’m pretty sure you’ve won HER blessings and grace!!!

Achu-Muruku: I’m sure we don’t eat a chicken or a goat alive, we buy it from the market or a store and as any sensible Indian we will either make a curry, varruval or perratal out of it and yeah I don’t deny some of us make curry from the blood, head, intestines etc. but you have to understand it’s to satisfy our own personal greed and hunger and cutting a chicken or a goat in a temple, in the name of GOD reasoning we have to feed her with their blood to satisfy her is a bit dramatic… as we commoners think if GOD is the creator, preserver and the destroyer – why do we need to give them a taste of their creation? They have complete charge over us, if the GOD wants anything – they could take it for themselves. Why do you want to cut a chicken or a goat which can’t speak for their self??!
So to the people who believe in such rituals lets ask this question… are you ready to give your head to be cut and to be presented to GOD as a sacrifice? Will YOU say YES to the invitation?

Achu-Muruku: Well I respect for the fact that your mom does this, see this is devotion! You give what you got…YOU GIVE WHAT YOU GOT! You walk on fire; you carry kavadi’s, fasting, vegetarianism etc. that is sacrifice… your sacrifice as a creation of HIM in thanksgiving! Sacrificing an innocent life is not a sign of devotion at at all!
But I have to disagree with your pointless invitation to drink a glass of blood, walk on fire and jump on razor sharp knifes. Duh… let them decide what to do to express their devotion to GOD, I mean why do they have to do it just because you insist? It’s a personal sadhana not be publicized… ?

I’ d seen this video clips before. I really not agreed to this video clips. I’d read many books about kaliamma. South indians described her fearce but for north indians they described as lovely god and beutifull. If u sit and pray u will feel the peace in mind. This is what i feel about her.

. and to those who are in support of animal sacrifice, take a few moment to do self reflection. do you agree that god is omniscience (infinite knowledge), omnipotence (unlimited power), omnipresence (present everywhere), omnibenevolence (perfect goodness), divine simplicity, and eternal and necessary existence? who do you turn up to whenever you are in despair? have god ever asked anything in return for what god has given to you? (i can go on asking such questions…but it would not do any good if these questions couldn’t knock you into some sense). first of all you people need to understand the meaning of offering to god. it is done as a sign of gratitude, a sign of contentment to what god has given us. god didn’t ask for anything, it is YOU that is giving to him. having said that, a simple offering which is done SINCERELY is enough to please god. do good to others and it will please god even more. but what most fucktards do is that they are bribing god. they sacrifice goat to get 4d, renovate a small temple to get promotion etc. think people THINK!
just blindly believing what others tell you will do you no good. analyse, justify and then decide whether it is worth believing or not.

Her three eyes represent past, present, and future, — the three modes of time — an attribute that lies in the very name Kali (‘Kala’ in Sanskrit means time).
Kali’s proximity to cremation grounds where the five elements or “Pancha Mahabhuta” come together, and all worldly attachments are absolved, again point to the cycle of birth and death. The reclined Shiva lying prostrate under the feet of Kali suggests that without the power of Kali (Shakti), Shiva is inert.
