“Semma” oru complaint against THR Raaga
As we all may know, THR Raaga is a revolutionized Tamil radio broadcast aimed at youngsters and those modern-minded individuals. Their all-time rival, Minnal.FM, used to be the sole Tamil radio broadcast those days until THR Raaga came into action and plunged Minnal.FM down the list. Ever since then, Minnal.FM has been labeled as ‘obsolete’ and they are no longer reckoned to be a ‘hit’ amongst the Malaysian Indians nowadays, as THR Raaga proved to be otherwise. It’s like comparing the Hallmark Channel with HBO; both serve the same purpose but one happens to be old-fashioned while the other is filled with fun. No offense in this.
A few weeks ago, THR Raaga introduced a new contest, in which the radio deejays would be calling some people randomly and the person who answered the call would have to say a sentence in order to win some cash. That sounds easy isn’t it? All the participants got to do is to send a text message to THR Raaga stating their name and IC number and if they are lucky enough, the next day they might be getting a call from the deejays.
As mentioned in Newton’s 3rd law, every actions would have its own reaction. The folks at Malaysia Hindu Sangam couldn’t help themselves but to come up with a press release by condemning THR Raaga regarding their latest contest. For more info, refer to the letter below.

1) First and foremost, the sentence that the participants got to say when getting a call from THR Raaga is:
THR Raaga – Semma Hot-te, Semma Hit-te
If the folks at Malaysia Hindu Sangam managed to do some homework before coming up with a ‘press release’, they would have known that the sentence reads as “THR Raaga – Semma Hot-te, Semma Hit-te” and NOT “THR Raaga – Semma Hot-te, Semma Heat-te” as they wrote. If they wanted the sentence to be spelled in pure Tamil, the correct pronunciation would have been (rough guess):
THR Raaga – Seriyana sude, seriyana sude (“Heat” as mentioned by MHS and an alternative for “Semma”)
You accidentally pronounce it by misspelling one alphabet in ‘sude’ and there comes a big havoc. By the way, by doing this change, I don’t find it any better compared to the original sentence, even if the modified version will be far more pure and ‘decent’ looking than the one that I came up with. It’s not the language that matters but as long as the message is absorbed, then why the fuss?
2) According to the press release, the usage of “Semma” seems to be “culturally refutable”. I wonder, what rights do they have on this word? Who are they to educate to radio stations on which words are culturally acceptable and which are culturally refutable? Even in local telemovies, I have seen many times when the actors/actresses would be using some “Bahasa Pasar” while talking and I don’t think by listening to their words, my culture / religion / race / language has been degraded.
3) If this kind of mentality by MHS persists, I won’t be surprised if sooner or later, there would be some press release for all the local telemovies and dramas, local songs (Darkkey and Kashmir Stone, kindly take note) and even Malaysian Indian bloggers for using some culturally refutable words. Come on folks, it’s their way of talking and I don’t see the point on why you people have to interfere in one’s freedom of language.
4) If Malaysia Hindu Sangam seems to be acknowledging the word “Semma” as an unpleasant word, they can’t expect others to follow the same. For instance, the word “maire” might have been a common word for some of us but of course, we won’t be forcing others to think the same. If they think that the word is somewhat offending and considered way too rude, so be it. It’s their opinion regarding the word and I do respect it.
Here are my assumptions on the other words that may seem to be unappealing for the folks at MHS.
- Jokka Irukke
- Savadiya Irukke
That being said, no one can stop anyone from using any of the words above. They are not rude neither they are unpleasant. It’s just the matter of how they are putting the words into a sentence. As such, I don’t think what THR Raaga had come up with is something degrading or unpleasant as the sentence merely means that THR Raaga is a super hit and a hot radio channel.
For those who have been complaining to Malaysia Tamil Hindu Sangam regarding THR Raaga, I have a solution for you:
Stop listening to it. Tune in to Minnal.FM henceforth. No one is stopping you and no one is holding you back either.
Seriously, that is the best solution that I could recommend. Complaining about how they are talking and their usage of words won’t help in any way as that is what makes them unique and different from their rival. Perhaps Malaysia Hindu Sangam should focus more on curbing those illegal shrines and temples from mushrooming all over the country rather than educating radio stations on usage of words.
Guys, what you have to say regarding “Semma”?
*I am not an ardent fan of THR Raaga.
*I do not hate Minnal.FM.

Well Said Makkez bro..From those days MHS always bring up ridiculous issues…Guyz.. THR is a Radio Station..MUSIC and it is to entertain people.. there is nothing wrong with the new tag-line… Dear MHS, for your kind information, im also a listener of Aahaa FM ( One of the Top Radio Station in Chennai, Owned by Kumudham Publications) Their programs are simply superb..I even compared their program with our local station.. This is because the way the present is very natural n lively.. In my opinion, THR Raaga is doing their best… Stop complaining… IF you’re not happy, Minnal.FM is always there for you…First of all try to pronounce it correctly..
Agree with Freek OF nature as well… THR is the only entertaining tamil radio station…We dont have much options here…
MHS…..there many more unresolved issues, affecting indian community out there.. Please concentrate in that….

Emphasis for proper tamil in THR poor compare to minnal.fm….
but when come to contest, using attractive slogans, in my point of view , acceptable. Reason:
THR need to make this contest “HOT”, because they get sponsor from “1 drop perfume”, and to make sure sponsors flow in continuously to make sure the radio station survive.
Minnal FM, does not have this problem, they does not have to “HOT”, or “HIT”, to attract any sponsors to survive , basically because they are being sponsored by GOVERNMENT.

Haha…agree with viji la… crazy people all of them…
Nothing in MHS’s letter to THR says anything about the radio contest where listeners have to say that ‘semma’ thing…anyway, I got to agree that school children have started to use that tagline for all the wrong reasons. No more that ‘savadi’ word to describe a girl, it’s “semma hot-te semma hit-te” now.
I got to agree that THR should come up with an Indian tagline and not a one mixed with English, after all, THR Raaga is not an English station, right???
About personal enrichment and educational knowledge, I don’t think THR offers any to its listeners. It is purely an entertainment radio channel which offers fun stuffs and nothing else. Someone gave comment that THR is good because of actor/actress interviews! My gosh! Is that so important for that person??? How has that interview helped him in his life?
Even THR Raaga dj’s don’t speak proper Tamil except for few of them. They use lots of English words to make their points and also to sound hip. We don’t have such nonsense in Minnal which has over the years come up with so many enrichment programmes which has helped its group of listeners to learn as well. Their dj’s speak better tamil. Programmes are streamlined to cater for those who are hungry for information, be it educational, health, social activities and consumer rights. However, most of THR Raaga’s programmes are craps with absolutely no value for listeners. Only their weather report seems to be reliable. The rest are pure trash!
Anyway guys, me think THR have taken it seriously too, they are getting listeners to vote on the catch words. Vote for the old one to come back or the ‘semma’ one to be retained.
Avengelai sporting ah edethukeranga nameleke enna problem? THR is business la guys, customer comes first. So lets chill.
For me THR is less talk more song, so better. But when they announced the new catch word i wasn’t overly excited either.
No support here for MHS but its thier freedom of speech la. (They do not represent all indians altough they think they do!).
Any small action in the direction of creating purity of mind and speech would only benefit us, alleva?

the thing is, y argue which channel is better and which is not… as u ppl says minnal.fm gives more educational thingy and thr is solely entertainment… its all stated there.. ppl wo want more educational stuff listen to minnal.fm and who want entertainment listen to thr.. semme hot-te and semme hit-te nothing wrong to use those taglines.. as we all knw thr is solely entertainment purposes.. its more like marketing techniques, just to target the segments. using words that ppl casually uses is nothing wrong. if u think ur children are getting spoiled with just those words.. dont tell me u dont let your childrens to see television at all.. nowdays even tamilnadu indian programs they use this kind of words.. aite? other then if childrens are being so spoiled just because hearing to thr, what parents doing? neva ought to teach their children… i think we better stop complaining and choose wat we need. even when we speak malay we dont speak bahasa baku aite,,,or we dont use shakespeares english aite… so why the fuss…. ? if u want to provide ur childrens a good tamil and wanna save tamil improve ur tamil education system and send ur kids to tamil school… do proper things to save ur temples, schools and society. how many of we send our kids to tamil school to save our tamil… not many… so why making fuss for one simple word semme… and it is not an unpleasant word either. as some said previously… if u want fun listen to thr raaga…. if u dont want listen to minnal.. its ur choice…. u been given choice… so use it dont condemn it. For example, im johorean and im 30 yrs old neva in my life i eva listen to minnal.fm even from young itself.. i used to listen to singapore radio channel.. it is more lively. even if sumone at home tune in to malaysian tamil radio i will off it. but since thr came im not listening to singapore radio. so different ppl hv different taste… so dont spoil it…
thank you
and sorry if i upset anyone.
Thumbelina.. well said
i agree….
Semma is thrash talk, it’s akin to the madras way of talking tamil. Radio stations have to be careful with what the air to the public. This is what social responsbility is all about. If some people like this thrash talks and they do in fact communicate in this thrash tamil, then it depicts the level of parental nurturing and the surrounding they grew up. Unfortunately, more and more are talking thrash tamil. Safe the beautiful tamil language.
i know MHs student very tamil patru. but commanla student support them. we a indian and they all indian also. so we must support them
well said Tamilan.
Hi all,
Hmm…I think we’ve got a serious problem here. Which is the best among this three stations??? Raaga…Minnal or Oli??? On my point of view…I think everyone has their own way of producing & presenting their shows on air! Basically the listeners should bare in mind that we’re only to absorb the ingredients of the shows and not the branding! Cos branding can be deceiving whereas a proper ingredient would gives us the best taste…in this matter…I think everyone has their individual talents! Although I’m from Singapore, I still enjoy listening to Raaga. Everyone should also take note that it’s the most difficult job to produce & present a radio programme! A RJ should take note of all problems from many side…don’t just see the bad points and don’t forget to wish them for their good shows at times, it’ll really boost them to do more good shows in future. This is my personal opinion!
Endrum Anbudan,
S.S.Varthini
please don’t interfere with people’s rights….if they want to listen thr or minnal fm….it’s up to them,if we have our ability to think which is the best for us,then there should not be any fuss on the word ‘semma’.
Tamilan, fully agree with you. Raaga is full of trash and they are adding more trash in their programs lately.
The other day at Raaga during one of the interview session with a police officer who is in charge of the police k9 unit, both the deejays were so immature and childish. They really proved that they are bunch of pathetic idiots with such silly comments and cheap talks during the interview! All those who listened to the interview will know what I am talking about.
biasathane !! now they will ban this ban that but later if it happen again they will make dont know ne ….
like last time when the apachean come out with the tirukural song they BAN it , but see now how many movies and albums remaking and using tirukural and other god song’s
these malaysian hindu sangam better start doing something good then giving other indian headache………….
there is much more better things to do to improve hinduism then stop people from using certain words……….
hey… why la wanna kutuk our own relegion …. their doing the best …

same issue with all hinduism,

well, i am a fan of THR yet when i first heard the semma hot-te semma hit-te line, it sounded a bit cheap, but now i am used to it, infact peps me up after a hard day’s work…frankka solivittenappa…
vasanthi…do you know what religion is in the first place???????????? nobody kutuk religion…we kutuk radio station.
look who’s talking?…
interesting one…
sorry for not being able 2 visit makkez online 4 quite some time…
just got back from beijing conference..tat’s y…
MHS president approved tat letter 2 be circulated?
Sir, personally, let me ask u this…
I hope u still remember the problem at Teluk Pulai Klang Murugan Temple…
U came down to have a peace talk. I was there when u were talking to the ppl.
Do u remember u were using which language?
English of course!
So, where was this Tamil Payirpu when u were having tat talk?
And u said tis “Semma pratchanai-ya irukku”… not “Seriyana piratchanaiya irukku…”
And the highlight of the talk was- u were supposed to solve the problem there but you just left without doing so…
So, where is your reputable integrity as the Malaysian Hindu Sangam President?
Can u see wat we are saying now? clearly?
irukkira velai-ye vittu-tu, sennai aadu-kku maire pudungurathu(pardon me for my language… n it’s in tamil by the way..)
N to those who made complaints against THR Raaga:
1) No one forces u to listen THR Raaga
2) I started listening to THR at the age of 15, n look at me(my latest achievement)…I’m able to represent malaysia for the biotechnology conference involving directors, doctorates and field experts at beijing and the next upcoming delhi conference..plus doing my masters at UM… listening to THR Raaga didn’t turn me into a mob… why u ppl have the mentality tat listening to words like semma hot, hit can spoil ur kids… Are u ppl trying to say tat u dun raise ur kids but handover the job of raising kids to radio stations? watever…
And to MHS about minnal.fm….
Wat is the abbreviation for FM? Pls reconsider n change it to pure tamil words… and pls stop using salam muhibbah…change it into tamil version… n also satu malaysia…
some how it’s crystal clear on who made the complaints, yet we are not pointing our fingers… so, no one is intended…
watever la u ppl wit all tat bullshit(MHS), u are trying to grab attention of the public is it? Cos MHS is still under low profile, so u need someone to start a chaos and unfortunately d victim is THR Raaga… Good job n KUDOS MHS (intentional ‘pun’)(not the malay pun.. it’s d pun in english)..
it’s not a debate on which radio station is the best, but why MHS like to mooku-nolaikiran in theva illathe vishayam when there are other important pending works….
owh by the way… i didn’t mean THR turned me ito a better person… it was my own hardwork… wat i was trying to say is tat listening to THR didn’t turn me into society’s trash as claimed by certain pro tamilians…. naanum tamilachi thaan… tamil pesavum, eluthavum matrum padikkavum teriyum…
hmm.. at last, d issue already cums 2 an end this monday… d tagline back to ‘aaha sirantha isai’. even i dun against the ‘semme-hot,semme hit’ tagline…but personally i feel ‘aaha sirantha isai’ sounds precious n creates a feel that THR d best of all….. languages is pplz own desire…so,if u feel u r trendy, then turn on to THR..orelse if ur emphazing tamil pronouncation, then stick with minnal. after al,listening to radio is jz an entertainment!! btwn, u guys realise abt new anouncers in THR? how they sounds?wat u think?hmmmm…
@happeningbaberocks – I agree with you 101%. Never knew that you had so much of experience with MHS.
@minnie_gal – I’m not sure about those new announcers as I am not an avid listener of Raaga / Minnal.fm.
izit….they r on air during weekends only i guess….hope they can keep up the gud name of THR….
As Viji commented earlier, these ppl (MHS) dun have anuthing better to do. So many other agenda in the country which needs attention and rectification, and MHS got this THR issue to bring out. What a clown!
Dear MHS, think! If can’t think, hire people to do case study for u. That would work since u r ….less.By the way, what has the MHS done for the Indian Community?
Ennike thaan, tamilaneke tamilan support pannirukan!
dear frns there are too many unsolve matters in this world……so pls do not condemn each other let us be a good example for others…..
cool MHS…..cool THR both are wonderful channels….
Kudos to happeningbaberocks, Varthini and Thumbelina. Nicely put.
To Vpuli and others who supported MHS, I’m not against Tamil instead, I like Tamil very much but I must DISAGREE with you all on this “Semma Hot Semma Hit” thing. Whats wrong with these words. Yeah I agree “Ahaa Sirantha Isai” sounds better but it their decision. Why should we so bothered about a simple tag line? We are talking crap like the entire Tamil language which has been around for so long in currently depending only on THR Raaga to survive? Even people in Tamil Nadu don’t speak proper Tamil, we are malaysian and we have our own accent in Tamil as much as we have in English. So what?
1 more thing. Do you guys know that the Mohan guy is MHS Youth president is only about 20something yrs old? He practically had no experience in handling anything before and can’t even speak a proper Tamil. He is complaining about THR’s Tamil. How ironic.
I bet there is no proper research has been done or no proper complaints lodged as they claim. They just make up a story based on what THEY personaly feel and claiming the public is complaining. Its utter BULLSHIT! They are trying to gain popularity among the political leaders so they can fill in the current empty slot in politics left by MIC.
I know them personaly and I know whats in their mind.
Get over word usage in malaysian tamil radio. It’s IRRELEVANT.
Why?
Because we are really not here to propogate or advocate Tamil language usage – we live in a country consisting of a pot pourri of languages from all continents.
What is RELEVANT is propogating the QUALITY OF MALAYSIAN ARTS, of which indian arts is a huge part.
No need to harp on how much we are doing for tamil as a language, because it is only ONE medium. Other medium of Indian culture besides language is developing SKILL in the arts – dance, music, theatre.
Let’s use that. ENOUGH about language. Iyal-Isai-Naadagatthai kaapaatru. Not just IYAL. Developing the language is TAMIL NADU’s perogative, not yours, Malaysia.
Well guys , i like THR but i dont like the DJ , i just switch to other FM stations . THR is doing a good job and the DJ ( Anand & Ram ) are doing thier job by keeping the young generations tuned. Its a trend and wait till another station comes by and if they are better than THR , why no listen to them.
Hindu sangam got no modal at all and go help the young Malaysian Indians into business and get the bad hats to the right path instead of blowing things out of proportion.
THR , you guys have some good DJ’s but some can be really irritating and they like to KONJURANNING ( pretend ) in the radio. I dont think they talk that way at home. My hats off to Anand and Ram who are the same when you meet them and also in the radio.
So what i do when i dont like them , I tune to other station or off the radion!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MHS janganlah sibuk! Theres lots of issues to look into – especially Indian communities issues. …Do lah something. Be professionals..dont act buta tuli lah. …
